Dear Eric and Hannah,
My name is N. James. I am the Project Director of Makereere Kivulu Child Development Centre where your sponsored child, Cissy, attends. I thank you very much for all the support that has enabled us to minister to Cissy who had lost hope.
We meet with children weekly. The centre day begins with devotion followed by age grouped curriculum activities. The children also engage in activities like Bible study, peer discussions, health education, social emotional activities where children are listened to, counseled, helped to play and release stress, skills to live harmoniously among others. Children are also introduced to livelihood skills to earn a living or supplement their income.
Children have been ministered to holistically. There is a reduction in preventable illnesses and malnutrition through education trainings and meals served at the project. Children can how survive and thrive amidst the critically vulnerable slum environments.
The project provides education, school materials, spiritual programs, nutrition, medical assistance, parental education, economic empowerment opportunities and social support for children and caregivers. We have watched children grow physically healthy, exhibit health relationships and demonstrate an awareness of the love of God. Some highly vulnerable children and families have been given additional support like school fees, medication, beddings, mattresses, mosquito nets, soap, Vaseline, scholaristic materials, blankets, bed sheets, shoes, food.
The project has been able to preach the Word of God to the children, caregivers and community. Many children and adults have given their lives to Christ and discipled in the knowledge of God.
Among special events is celebration of children birthdays, tours, youth camps and outreaches, children home visits, school visits, Easter and Christmas celebrations.
Caregivers have been trained in income generating activities, some formerly jobless have started businesses and living conditions have improved for some of them.
Children aged 12 and above are taught to set life goals. We also prepare children for completion using "My Plan for Tomorrow." These plans help children to focus and plan for their future.
The project received Complementary Intervention Fund and constructed a modern toilet improving sanitation and health education funds to train caregivers on prevention of common illnesses. These interventions have improved the general health in our community.
Being a slum community there were many cases of drug abuse, child abuse and a famous place for harboring law breakers. Sponsor support has helped us minister, make outreaches, community sensitizations and now we can see a positively impacted and changed community where some have dropped bad behaviors and have joined our church.
Children are happy to receive letters and write to their sponsors. Even family members join in letter reading and feel loved since they know that there is someone who loves them. When children receive letters from a sponsor, they treat them like gold and safely keep them, when it is time for writing, they are very excited. When sponsors visit children, they feel unbelievable that their sponsors have come and show how much the sponsors value them.
Please pray for the ministry such that we can use the program and extend God's kingdom. Join us to pray for God's providence and long life.
I once again thank you very much for all the support that has brought smiles and full hope to Cissy.
Yours in Christ's service,
N. James
Isn't this a wonderful project? I am currently looking for a sponsor for a little guy, Derrick, who attends this project! If you would like to know more, please click here.
